Excessive and unregulated internet use can lead to addictive behavior, characterized by a loss of control and preoccupation with the virtual world at the expense of reality. This excessive internet use has been linked in numerous studies to the emergence of symptoms of depression. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the relationship between excessive internet use and depression among female students at the College of Education in Ajilat. The study aims to identify the relationship between excessive internet use and depression, determine the level of overuse, and reveal a statistically significant correlation between excessive internet use and depression. There are no statistically significant differences in the level of depression between kindergarten and psychology majors. Identify statistically significant differences based on academic age.
The descriptive analytical approach was used for its suitability for describing the two phenomena and measuring the degree of correlation between them. A simple random sample of (98) female students from the Kindergarten and Psychology departments at the College of Education - Ajilat was selected from the study population. The Internet Overuse Scale, prepared by Bushra Ismail Arnabut (2007), and the Beck Depression Scale, an Arabicized version by Gharib Abdel Fattah Gharib (2000), were used. The results were as follows:The level of Internet overuse among the sample was average, indicating a moderate dependence on the internet that could develop into a more severe addiction in the absence of guidance or regulation. The level of depression among the sample was average, indicating the presence of depressive symptoms that warrant psychological follow-up, especially given social and academic pressures. There is a strong, statistically significant, direct relationship between Internet overuse and depression; the greater the Internet overuse, the greater the degree of depression. There were no statistically significant differences in internet overuse or depression attributable to academic year. This is explained by the fact that internet use patterns and psychological stress are similar among students at all academic levels.
